And if you use a wide aspect ratio screen, iChat AV uses patented anamorphic resizing techniques so that the video of the person you're chatting with fills the entire screen without distortion. IChat AV also lets you size your video window to whatever size suits your style - from the large default of 352 x 288 pixels to full screen. In Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Apple integrated support for VNC screen sharing, allowing users to share their desktop remotely as a video chat over either the XMPP or AIM protocols. Apple also released iChat Theater, which could share a photo, video, or any document supported by Quick Look over a video chat (below).

Tony: Thank you. I opened the web site and found the useful information I was looking for. I'm relieved that I don't have to join AOL just to enjoy my video conferencing software. I entered information as instructed when creating my buddy list. We'll see if it works when we get on line. One more thing if I may: The buddy name is greyed out with the running AIM logo to its right.
Is this normal? I'm less frustrated and guardedly optimistic. Thanks for taking the time to help. Steve iMac4,1 Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.6). Ralph the ibook was running the newest version of osx 10.4.6. Just like my macbook.
I didn´t know about the quick time streaming to cause problems with ichat. I set it to 'automatic'. I also used that setting with my ibook. Now to the firewall. I don´t think it´s a firewall issue because i completely turned it off and still it did not work.
But i read the faq you posted and adjusted the ports. TCP -5190 UDP -5060, 5190, 5678, 3. Is this the way i type it into the fields? I mean with a comma and a space? I´m on an airport network. Maybe i have to change something in the airport admin tool?
I'm having a problem setting up a video chat with a PC user who has an AIM account. He is using AIM 5.9, and I am using iChat AV 3.1.4. Both of us have firewalls turned off. We are able to see each other's status, and send video chat invitations, but when either of us 'accepts' an invitation, the video chat does not start. Instead, I get an error message in iChat saying (approximately) 'Failed to start video chat because: did not respond.' On the PC he just gets a message saying the connection was disconnected. I get the same problem both on a desktop (PowerMac) at home and on a laptop (MacBook Pro) at work.
Different machines, different network connections. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this failure? Any help would be much appreciated.Another loyal but frustrated Mac user. Where is Apple in this discussion group?
IChats not working with each other is a common problem, even between identical macs. Right now, i'm trying to get a G5 iMac and an intel iMac to talk but only get the 'failed to respond' message. Both are loaded with RAM, no other processes going on and plenty of bandwidth.
All OSs are up to date 10.4.6 as is all software, including the new QT 7.1.1 posted yesterday. When i tried to iChat/video with a customer who was using a PC with AOL, it worked for awhile then never again. Same 'failed to respond' error. Apple, where are you??!! Fix this.
problem! If i wanted a computer and software that didn't work, i'd have bought a PC. Well, that's not true-i'd never use a PC, but you get the point! Hi Tony, At home: Ethernet connection via hub to Airport router (the router firmware is up-to-date, though I cannot check the version number from here). Router is configured for NAT. Router is connected directly to cable modem to ISP, using DHCP to assign an IP address to the router. At work: Wireless network connection to our department's network; plus VPN, which is needed to access many network services.
I don't know the make/model of our department's wireless equipment but I suspect it doesn't matter. Hi vadve, On one level it does not matter what device it is. On the other hand it may need setting up in which case if we know what devices it is we can point to some resouces that may help.

We would post the actul iChat settings for the device from and save you about three or so pages of stuff. Having said that the page seems to have gone completely gaga on iChat settings. It seems they are offering a configuration tool that will hlep windows users. (really helpful for Mac Applications on Macs). 8:02 PM Thursday; June 1, 2006. Ralph, Thanks for the reply. I don't think port forwarding is the cause of my problems.
I've used iChat with video from my home machine before (with another Mac user), and it worked fine. It just isn't working with a PC user. I have not used iChat at work before, but there is no NAT stuff going on at work so I assume port forwarding should not be needed here either.
It looks like somehow the video stream is not being set up correctly since the previous steps in the protocol seem to work fine. Do you have any ideas on what could be causing the video stream not to work? One possibly relevant point is that the PC user is on a machine in Bombay and I'm in Illinois, so the latency could be quite high. He has broadband at his end so the bandwidth should not be too bad.
